Comic Books for Video Gamers

Into video games? Want to get into comics? I've got some suggestions for things you might like:

If you like Dark Souls, you should try Berserk.

If you like Persona, you should try Shutter. (Frankly, everyone should try Shutter; it's the most criminally under-read comic I can think of.)

If you like Castlevania, you should try Baltimore.

If you like The Order: 1886, you should try The New Deadwardians. (Admittedly, no one likes The Order all that much.)

If you like Control, you should try Injection.

If you like Dishonored, you should try Lady Mechanika.

If you like Alice, you should try Pandora Hearts.

If you like BioShock, you should try Monstress.

If you like Metal Gear Solid, you should try Doom Patrol.

Berserk's Tendrils of Influence

I've currently read all the volumes of Kentaro Miura's Berserk manga that have officially been translated into English. Aside from the story and art, the series comes with a built-in mini-game: spot the influences. Berserk draws heavily on established visual vocabulary in its character designs:

Mad Max and Guts

The Phantom of the Paradise and Femto

Berserk has also inspired a lot of other media, particularly the games created by FromSoftware:

Berserk's Mark of Sacrifice and Bloodborne's Hunter rune

Berserk's corpse-wheel monsters and Dark Souls' corpse-wheel monsters

Berserk's horse demon and Bloodborne's Ludwig the Accursed

Berserk's religious nut armed with a wagon wheel weapon and Bloodborne's Logarius wheel (Logarius is, predictably, a religious nut)

The Castlevania Timeline

Ever wonder how all the Castlevania games fit together?

Well, wonder no more. GameThumbTV has done a fun series that explains the history of Dracula being whipped to death.

Part 1: Origins of Evil

Part 2: Destiny of the Belmont Clan

Part 3: Passing the Torch

Part 4: The End of Dracula

Part 5: The Lords of Shadow

Part 6: Tragedy of the Belmont Clan

Witcher Documentary

The Witcher games are pretty cool, somewhat despite the triteness of the main character, but did you know there is an in-depth documentary about them?

Check out this multi-part series from Noclip that goes in-depth with The Witcher games and the team that made them:

The Story of CD Projekt

Remembering The Witcher 1 & 2

Designing the World of The Witcher 3

Designing the Quests of Wild Hunt

Architectural Tour of Dunwall

I love the videos that follow below: they are a deep dive into the visual aesthetics and world-building in the game Dishonored by a smart fellow named Simon with a PhD in architecture. Throughout the series, Simon analyzes the architectural styles, construction materials, and ornamentation to give a really compelling and unique reading of the game. I hope that he digs into Dishonored 2 at some point.

Vidya Games That Look Good in 2018

Code Vein
This looks like some Grade-A Dark Souls + anime bullshit.

Sunless Skies
Weird steampunks in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
The spiritual successor to Castlevania? Yes, more of that, please.

Darksiders 3
My money's on her, tbh.
